President Chen visited Wufeng Township to examine the spring rice crop and talk with farmers. Under the hot sun, the president said he wanted to roll up his sleeves and pants, and plant rice seedlings in the paddies alongside farmers. Plunging his feet into the muddy paddies certainly brought back happy memories from his youth.

President Chen is one of Taiwan’s most devout baseball fans. Watching baseball games is one of the most uplifting events enjoyed by the Taiwan people. President Chen has to be one of the easiest people to work with when he is to deliver a televised speech. While he does not have much to say about his hair, make-up or the set, he spends considerable effort reviewing every word of his speech, hoping that it will be well-received. As the president frequently says, “There are some things that need to change and others that don’t.” The picture shows the filming of President Chen’s Armed Forces Day address on September 3.

While serving as Taipei mayor, Chen Shui-bian made a name for himself by dressing up as Michael Jackson. As president, he delighted crowds wearing scuba diving gear, perhaps the most extraordinary outfit he has ever put on since his presidency. When accompanying reporters jokingly compared him to a member of F4, a popular Taiwan boy band, President Chen found this adjective used to describe him hilarious. The picture shows the president experiencing the beauty of the underwater ecosystem while on a trip to Palau.

This is a picture of the first lady on her trip to Europe. Since an accident decades ago, she has been confined to a wheelchair. Over the years, poor circulation has caused stomach and intestinal discomfort, leading to an uneven body temperature. As a result, the first lady faces significant challenges every time she leaves home. However, she is willing to withstand this discomfort to help the world see Taiwan. She finds an inner strength and puts on a smile, helping Taiwan to chalk up diplomatic accomplishments.

President Chen accompanies First Lady Wu Shu-jen to the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport as she prepares to head to the United States to help the president carry out a diplomatic agenda. In the past, the first lady accompanied the president on his overseas journeys, but this is the first time that she is going on her own and is the center of attention. Few can imagine the responsibility she is shouldering. The president is encouraging his wife, but at the same time his concern for her is written on his face.

In the past, people have asked the president his religion. Is he a Christian or is he a Taoist? The president said he believes in the instructions left by the nation’s founding father Dr. Sun Yat-sen, who advocated the everlasting and universal values of freedom, peace, compassion and human rights throughout his life. The president continues to strive to realize these values. In March 2006, the Presidential Office selected a new photograph of Dr. Sun from which an oil painting was made. The photograph selected was taken in 1910 when Dr. Sun was in Vancouver, Canada.

No matter how unpredictable the political situation may become, one thing that never changes is President Chen’s hairstyle. The president, who walks fast and is constantly working hard, must take time out from time to time to sit still to have his hair cut. For this short time, he is at the mercy of the barber.

Originally, the president was only to view the exterior of the Jhunan Snake Kiln on a trip to Miaoli County. Little did organizers expect that the president would duck into the dark kiln to see what the inside was like. The president was curious about the history of this 35-year-old kiln. It was like a time tunnel, taking him back to his childhood.

Close friends of President Chen know that he regularly uses various gestures--A-bian body language--when he speaks to add emphasis to what he is saying.
